Can luxury brands trust authenticators to wipe out counterfeits?

Chanel’s court battle with secondhand luxury platform What Goes Around Comes Around underlines a lack of trust in luxury authentication processes, leaving resale sites exposed. “You have to look at the smallest details — the stitching, the weight of the thread,” says Fashionphile master authenticator Alison Young, pointing to the interlocking “CC” logo on the inside of a classic black Chanel flap bag on screen. As spotting fakes becomes more difficult, Young explains, she has to pay attention “to every component”.

As the popularity of Y2K style continues to surge, from chain belts and 1990s Jean Paul Gaultier ‘naked’ dresses, the latest item to have its moment in the sartorial spotlight is the racing jacket. Contrary to its wardrobe counterpart the black leather jacket, the Italian streetwear staple is adding an injection of colour and texture to our wardrobes next season, after it was seen on several brand’s AW22 runways earlier this year, from Chloe and Dior, to Alexander McQueen.
